The fig was the favourite fruit of ancient Greeks. The vegetation of Corfu is rich in Fig trees and that is why it is one of the favourite raw ingredients in the preparation of sweets. A typical product from Corfu is sykomaida (fig pie). The word comes from ‘fig’ and the ‘mass’, which is the result of mixing. Grape and dried figs are flavoured with anise and pepper, and are wrapped in grape leaves.
It is eaten as dessert or dried fruit, but may accompany with Greek ouzo or raki/tsipouro.
